Luke Landrigan Signs With Billabong

By zweisberg - November 18, 2009 - 23:59

Joining the likes of Lee Wilson, Rahtu Suargita, Agus Frimanto and Raditya Rondi of the super strong Billabong South East Asia Surf Team is Philippines finest, Luke Landrigan.

Luke has been surfing his whole life, but coming from a small surf town is hard to get sponsored he said. But it’s harder not to spot a huge talent and potential like his! “Coming from a small surf town and being the first Filipino to be with Billabong ASIA is unbelievable! I used to draw the Billabong logo on my boards when i was a grommet and now it is for real. I’m super stoked and lucky to be part of the team. Mabuhay!”

When he’s not busy winning surf competitions and appearing on magazine covers, Luke can be found teaching the kids of the Philippines the joys of surfing through his surf school based in La Union, a three hour drive North of Manila. Luke’s surf school doubles as the San Juan Surf Resort and caters for the aspiring Filipino youngsters and travelling tourists alike.

“Luke is one of the nicest, most humble guys in the industry,” stated Billabong Asia Brand Manager Peter Thew. “His surfing is super strong and we’re pumped to have him on the team. The key thing though is his attitude and commitment to the growth of the sport and lifestyle through his surf school program in La Union.” Thew added.

Luke’s focus for the upcoming year will be both aimed at competition’s and continuing to grow his already successful surf school in the Philippines. There has been a rapid progression in the quality of surfers from the SE Asian nation in the past few years, with the Philippines holding some of the worlds best waves, given the right season. Congrats and welcome to the Billabong family, Luke!

2009 Coca-Cola Indonesian Surfing Championship Awards Night Celebration at Kut

By zweisberg - November 18, 2009 - 22:38

The 2009 Coca-Cola ISC Tour capped off its best season ever with a year-end Awards Presentation Night at the Discovery Kartika Hotel Ballroom in Kuta on Saturday night November 14th, crowning Indonesia’s new surfing champions in 6 divisions, and recognizing the contributions of its sponsors and supporters while providing food and drink for the hundreds of surf industry and media invitees, and finishing it off by rocking out with the live band Pandora.

As is customary at the end of the ISC Tour season, hundreds of surfers, surf industry members, media, and supporters of the Coca-Cola ISC tour received invitations to attend the Awards Presentation Night and to join in recognizing Indonesias newest surfing champions and to celebrate the end of the ISCs 6th year of continued growth and success.

This years venue was the Ballroom of the Discovery Kartika Plaza Hotel on Kuta Beach, where the doors opened and the smiling ISC and Coca-Cola hostesses welcomed the attendees with Coca-Cola products and beer starting at just after 6 pm. Plenty of drinks went down while the crew mingled and swapped stories about the past season, and then the call for food went over the microphone, so all lined up to dig into the generous buffet tables to pile their plates high with delicious Indonesian food.

Back at the tables, while everyone was eating they were treated to a video recap of all the years events, with cheers for the best waves and the winners and hoots for the best wipeouts. Then with everyones hunger and thirst satisfied, it was on to the formalities of the evening.

First up were MCs Tai Graham and Ribut Wahyudi thanking everyone for attending and then introducing ISCs president Tipi Jabrik.

After a brief welcoming and thanking speech, Jabrik presented awards of appreciation to representatives from SurfTime Magazine, Magic Wave Surf Community Newspaper, and the environmental group GUS (Gelombang Udara Segar) and the Bali Lifeguard Department (Balawista).

Next up to receive their thanks for their tremendous support in sponsoring surfing events during the year were Jeff Anderson from Rip Curl, Kane Faint from Rusty, Tim Hawken from Billabong, Luzi Sanjaya from Oakley, Febrie Arianto from Quiksilver, and Mr. Amos representing the Government of Rote. Without major event sponsors like these there would there would be no ISC tour as we know it today, for most of these individuals representing their companies here tonight have been with us since the inception of the ISC, and we owe them a big debt of gratitude, said Jabrik from the podium while thanking the sponsors.

After receiving a heartfelt round of applause, the podium was emptied and Mr. Sani Dewi and Mr. Bruce Waterfield from Coca-Cola Bottling Indonesia were called up to receive their appreciation award and to say a few words. Coca-Cola has been the sponsor of the ISC tour since mid 2008, and has been a tremendous supporter of not only the surfing industry but also the beach cleanup and environmental efforts in Bali. In his thanks to Bruce and Sani for their support, Jabrik said, The support given by Coca-Cola to the ISC and to Bali has brightened the future of the surfing industry, the beaches of Bali, and the potential of Indonesian surfers to have a good life doing what they love. We thank them and look forward to their continued support.

Bruce responded saying We are delighted at how successful the ISC has been and proud to be associated with the Tour and its members. Bali is such a special place, and we want to see it remain that way, for ourselves and for the next generations to come. We are excited about the prospects for the future and look forward to being a continued part of it for a long time to come. We want to make a difference, and it looks like we are doing just that, so thank you very much!

Next was into the main event, the presentation of championship trophies and checks to the winners in the six ISC surfing divisions. Bruce Waterfield and Tipi Jabrik made the presentations to the championship winners as follows:

2009 Coca-Cola ISC Tour Champions

Mens Open Division - Lee Wilson (Rp. 50 million)

Longboard Division Husni Ridwan (Rp. 5 million)

Masters Division - Wayan Widiartha (Rp. 5 million)

Womens Division Yasnyiar (Bonne) Gea (Rp. 5 million)

Pro Junior Division Mustofa Jeksen (Rp. 5 million)

Junior Division Putra Hermawan (Rp 5 million)

Mens Open Champion Lee Wilson, who was also champion in 2007 and is of mixed Indonesian and Australian descent, was generous in his acceptance speech, saying I’m so grateful to all the supporters and sponsors of the ISC tour. Without all of you I wouldnt be standing up here tonight. I thank everybody that had a part in it, however small or large, because it all works together to create this, our Dream Tour, where we get to surf and compete in the best waves in the best place in the world. So stoked to get my name on this trophy again too! Love you all!

With the Awards Presentations completed, the crowd was then treated to some incredible musicianship by the rock trio Pandora to close the evening. Pandora did an excellent job in covering some of Jimi Hendrixs most classic numbers, while also showing off some of their own original music in the rock and blues genre. A copious amount of Balis favorite beer was consumed until the last number was played and it was time to call it a night.

The ISC Management (Tipi Jabrik and Tim Hain) would like to thank the ISC crew (Ani Suandewi, Dewa Juana, Ngurah, Lorca Leuras) and the ISC judging/event crew for all their hard work throughout the year, and to all the sponsors and supporters of the ISC, especially Coca-Cola Bottling Indonesia, Billabong, Oakley, Quiksilver, Rip Curl, Rusty, the West Sumbawa Government and Tourism Forum, the Government of Rote Ndao, GUS, and media partners SurfTime, Magic Wave, Bali and Beyond, Now Bali, the Bali Times, the Beat, Trax Magazine, SurfTotal.com, Surfline.com, Baliwaves.com, SurfEdge.com, Surfersvillage.com, and Surfermag.com.

Garcia & Marzo Style Clash at Reef Hawaiian Pro

By zweisberg - November 18, 2009 - 22:36

Haleiwa, HI (Nov. 18, 2009) - Sunny Garcia, 39, was once quoted as saying that “tricks are for kids”. Twenty years deep in the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing presented by Rock Star Energy Drink, Garcia’s power surfing looked to be pulling rank again today. In the second-to-last heat of the day, Garcia posted the event’s highest two-wave total: 13.5 out of 20 points. But while Garcia enjoyed the moment, 20-year-old Clay Marzo, known world wide for a bottomless bag of convoluted tricks, was oblivious to the world and notching up a crowd-stunning score of 16.23 to close.
Garcia won his first Hawaiian Pro title here back in 1992, around the same time Marzo was first starting to show his affinity for water in his baby bath. His mind-blowing natural talent was front and center today as he became the only surfer to top Garcia.

Sunny is looking for a dream script here, in search of his sixth Hawaiian Pro title and seventh Triple Crown title as the cameras of his documentary film roll. For Marzo, this is his grand appearance on surfing’s premier stage; a total newcomer to the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing.

There were no subtitles required for Garcia’s powerful hacks and well-honed ship-to-shore rides. But spectators scrambled in the sand to put a name to the futuristic, fins-free, spinning moves that Marzo threw with the ease of a card dealer.

“It was a whip, blowie or a throw tail,” said a deadpan Marzo.

“I was super stoked the lefts were going today. It was kinda of windy and soft, but it was fun waves.

“Hale’iwa is a fun wave. I surfed it since NSSA’s. I’m pretty comfortable because I did good on some of those contests. It’s a fun wave. I just want to make a couple of heats and do pretty good because it’s my first year.”

Earlier in the day, southern Californian pair Tanner Gudauskas and Nathan Yeomans breathed a sigh of relief as they advanced one step closer to their goal of qualifying for the 2010 ASP Dream Tour.

Sitting on the bubble of qualification, at 17th on the ASP World Qualifying Series (WQS) ratings, Gudauskas mixed it up with his own version of airs, fins-free turns and on-rail gouges to win his heat.

“Before my heat I was worried about how my board was going to go,” said Tanner. “It’s a 5′7″ “Dumpster Diver” shaped for my brother Dane. It felt good the last couple days and I asked him if I could ride it today. My first couple waves I was falling and I was wondering if I made the right choice. But I got the ones at the end and my luck changed and my rhythm changed.”

If Tanner Gudauskas can crack the Top 16 of the WQS, he’ll join his other brother Patrick on the elite world tour. “Either way it goes, I’ll either be a (Dream Tour) travel buddy with Pat or a (WQS) travel buddy with Dane.”

Yeomans was equally successful today and next faces 2007 Vans Triple Crown champion Bede Durbidge (AUS) and Vans star John John Florence (HAW) in the next round.

Find out the call for the day, each day, as soon as it’s made by Director Randy Rarick by signing up for mobile text alerts at triplecrownofsurfing.com. For the latest surf updates, stay tuned to Surfline.com, the official surf forecaster of the Vans Triple Crown Triple Threat. All the action will be broadcast live on the web at triplecrownofsurfing.com, as well as on Hawaii television on Oceanic channel 250.

Making the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing presented by Rockstar Energy Drink possible: Reef, O’Neill, Billabong, Gidget Worldwide, Nixon, Turtle Bay Resort, Hawaiian Airlines, JN Automotive Group, Surfing Magazine, Surfline.com, FUEL TV, The Honolulu Advertiser, Hawaiian Springs Water, Road Runner, Climb On! chemical-free skincare, and the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP). The Series is proud to announce that it is working with local company Tr3ees to embark upon a greener, more sustainable future.

Highlights of the Reef Hawaiian Pro will be made available to television at the end of the event.

Surf Dog Raises $10,000 for Quadriplegic Patrick Ivison & 3 Years of Therapy

By zweisberg - November 18, 2009 - 14:04

SAN DIEGO, CA, November 17, 2009… Ricochet, (”Rip Curl Ricki,”) the Surfin’ for Paws-abilities surf dog, who has been leading a fundraising campaign over the last three months for Patrick Ivison, a 15 year old quadriplegic adaptive surfer, has raised more than $10,000 for his medical expenses! In addition, with the help of a grant from the WebMD Health Foundation, three years of his physical therapy will be funded!

Ricochet was winning surf dog contests over the last few months as she fundraised for Patrick, but raising over $10,000, along with the WebMD Health Foundation grant, is her biggest “prize” of all. Ricochet worked hard to create awareness for Patrick in his quest to continue his physical therapy which insurance doesn’t cover.
When WebMD Health Foundation caught wind of the story, they wanted to support Ricochet’s efforts, and offered her a sponsorship. They were also thrilled to help Patrick reach his goal of walking across the stage at his high school graduation, and are awarding a grant to the non profit organization that manages Patrick’s medical expenses. This commitment, and very generous grant from WebMD Health Foundation will pay for over three years of Patrick’s physical therapy!

Patrick and Ricochet started this journey together in August, when they performed their first tandem surf session between an adaptive surfer and a dog as part of the fundraising activities. The pair will continue their tandem surfing demonstrations, but will focus on paying it forward by helping others in need.

Ricochet has several other projects in the pipeline too, which include volunteering with Life Rolls On, and their award winning program, “They will Surf Again”. She will also be working with Happy Barrels Surf School and Wheels 2 Water to help raise awareness of surfers with disabilities. When Ricochet isn’t in the water, she’ll be working with children through Pawsitive Teams goal assisted therapy program. She is also looking at additional opportunities where she can educate, create awareness, and inspire people to realize anything is possible!

Ricochet was slated to be a service dog for people with disabilities, but had to be released from that role due to her strong drive to chase birds, which could be dangerous to a person with a disability. Rather than focus on what she couldn’t do, the emphasis was placed on what she COULD do, and the Surfin’ for Paws-abilities program was carved out for her. To see a touching video of Ricochet’s journey from service dog to SURFice dog, visit this link http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BGODurRfVv4

WebMD Health Foundation is a private foundation and is dedicated to improving the quality of healthcare through education, access, and innovative collaborations.
